The IBE The Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (IBE) is a research institute constituted by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Provisionally, it is located in the headquarters of the CMIMA and the PRBB institutes. Objectives Evolutionary biology aims at studying the processes and mechanisms generating biodiversity. The description and comprehension of biodiversity is one of the most important scientific challenges of the XXI Century, and coping with it requires the methods and concepts of evolutionary biology. In particular, we need to understand the genetic basis of the differences, either among species as well as within species, paying special attention at how these differences are fixed, transmitted, and how they interact with the environment. In addition, the description of genomes and the understanding of genomic differences between organisms are of paramount importance to understand the basic mechanisms of life and to place biodiversity into a robust evolutionary frame. The general objective of the IBE is to work in these contexts, using all available experimental and computational tools to understand the basic functioning of life, to describe and to put their diversity into context, to unveil the mechanisms generating biological innovations and, finally, to preserve this biodiversity. The strength of the IBE lies in its capacity to face these studies at different observational scales: morphological, physiological and genomic. Research Programmes
