L’aplicació de les anàlisis filogenètiques i genòmiques en l’estudi de la biodiversitat i l’evolució animal,  amb un enfocament específic en mamífers, és l’objectiu principal del grup de recerca de Filogènia i filogeografia de mamífers. Mitjançant l’ús de tècniques d’ultraseqüenciació i d’eines bioinformàtiques avançades s’analitza la divergència poblacional i el procés d’especiació en diferents complexos d’espècies per obtenir una millor descripció de la nostra diversitat biològica. Aquestes metodologies modernes també són utilitzades per estudiar les relacions de parentiu i de connectivitat entre poblacions en algunes espècies de gran importància per a la conservació, com és el cas de l’almesquera.
