In a collaborative study between the Institut de Biologia (IBE) and the Stanford University recently published in the journal PLoS Genetics, reserchers try to answer questions as are the extant North Africans the direct descendants of the remains dated in 50 thousand years ago of the first modern humans colonizing the region? Alternatively, do they descend from the Neolithic populations coming from the Near East that introduced the agriculture around 8 thousand years ago? Has there been genetic exchange between North Africa populations and their neighboring regions? When did that happen?
