El laboratori de Sistemes Complexos se centra a entendre els orígens evolutius dels sistemes complexos usant models matemàtics i aproximacions experimentals basades en la biologia sintètica. El laboratori va encunyar i desenvolupar el concepte de major  scientific transitions, entès com un marc per explorar els orígens de la innovació en evolució fent ús d’una aproximació paral·lela, concretament el nostre potencial per construir o simular sistemes sintètics que poden recrear esdeveniments evolutius passats. Això inclou l’origen de les protocèl·lules, els sistemes multicel·lulars, la simbiosi, la cognició i el llenguatge. Un altre àmbit de recerca aborda la Dinàmica Evolutiva Inestable, més específicament la dinàmica dels sistemes biològics ―en particular l’ARN dels virus i el càncer― que mostren una tendència vers una alta inestabilitat genètica intrínseca a la seva adaptació potencial. El laboratori de Sistemes Complexos també va introduir el concepte de terraformació en ecosistemes en risc o antròpics per evitar catàstrofes. Perquè la proposta sigui exitosa, cal desenvolupar una nova síntesi que impliqui escales múltiples i marcs conceptuals que abracin des de la biologia sintètica i els circuits cel·lulars fins a les comunitats ecològiques. Finalment, aquest laboratori també estudia l’evolució dels sistemes artificials, tant en ecosistemes simulats virtualment com en xarxes tecnològiques, per fer una definició acurada de les dinàmiques evolutives i de les filogènies tecnològiques.
