Discover IBE research at Open PRBB 2026

Once again, the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) is opening its doors for its annual Open PRBB event. This year’s edition will take place on Saturday, 3 October, and will feature free science outreach activities organised by the seven research centres based at the park.

This year, IBE will participate in Open PRBB with two science outreach workshops led by members of the Archaeogenomics and Human Genome Diversity laboratories; the exhibition “Butterflies in a Click”, organised by the Butterfly Diversity and Evolution Laboratory; and the #BeyondAbility workshop, which will explore functional diversity in science and research management.

PhD students Santiago Pérez and Juan Carlos Guevara, from IBE’s Human Genome Diversity Group, will lead the population genetics outreach workshop “What does DNA tell us about our recent history?”

Oral traditions and written records shed light on our past and on who we are. However, these approaches have their limitations. What can DNA tell us about our past and our identity? What do we know about our evolutionary history? Come and find out.

Meanwhile, PhD students Jordi Carbó, Maria Castaña Muñoz, Xavier Roca and Laura Claudia Verdasca, from IBE’s Archaeogenomics Group, will lead a workshop exploring how the analysis of ancient DNA can help reconstruct the genetic history of European populations and shed light on the relationships and movements of human communities over time.

The Evolutionary Genomics team will offer the workshop “Primate geolocation using DNA samples”, where they will explain how an animal’s geographical origin can be determined through its genetic material, a technique with major implications for the management and conservation of apes in Africa.

“Butterflies in a Click” exhibition

The incredible diversity of colours and patterns found on butterfly wings is both a natural spectacle and a source of inspiration for evolutionary researchers. Thousands of species around the world have a unique appearance, although it often takes a keen eye to appreciate the subtle details of their beauty.

During expeditions undertaken by IBE’s Butterfly Diversity and Evolution Group, the team is surrounded by butterflies and has the opportunity to observe them in detail through their cameras. In this exhibition, they share some of their favourite close-up photographs of European butterflies, hoping to offer visitors a fascinating new way of looking at these animals.

#BeyondAbility workshop

Judit Sainz, a UPF administrative staff member and member of IBE, will participate in one of the accessible tours of the different laboratories.

Visit the Open PRBB website for more information about the guided tours of the building. Tours will be conducted in groups of 10, accompanied by members of the research teams. The minimum age for participating is 12. Children aged between 6 and 12 will be able to take part in an interactive space featuring experiments adapted to their age group.
