Researchers have been interested for long in the evolution of  life histories of a group of leaf beetles, the genus Calligrapha. However, before they could start making meaningful questions about their evolutionary history, first researchers had to understand the diversity of this group.

This article focuses on a particularly difficult taxonomic issue: one name that fitted none and all species of North American Calligrapha. The study thies to shed light on the undestanding of the diversity of this group of beetles.
