Master's Research Stay – AFROEUR Human Population Genomics Afro-European Ancestry (6 Months)

The Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE-CSIC-UPF) is offering a 6-month part-time research stay for Master's students interested in human population genetics, ancestry, evolutionary history, and the historical and anthropological dimensions of genetic diversity. 

The selected candidate will join the Human Genome Biodiversity Lab, contributing to the AFROEUR project on the genetic diversity and relatedness of the oldest Afro-European human population, with a focus on the morenos of Gibraleón in Huelva and the genetic legacy of the Transatlantic slave trade in the Iberian Peninsula. The work will involve interpretation of ancestry and admixture results, analysis of relatedness, inbreeding and population structure, literature review, and statistical visualization of population genomic data. 

What we offer

  • 6-month part-time position (20 hours/week)
  • €700 monthly stipend
  • Training in population genomics, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and interdisciplinary research combining genomic, historical, and anthropological data
  • Research experience in a leading laboratory in human population genomics and Iberian/Afro-European ancestry
  • Workplace located at Barcelona (passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta, 37 – 49), next to the beach.

Main requirements

  • Degree in Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum Bachelor's average grade of 7.0/10
  • Enrolled (or admitted) to an official Master's programme in Biological Sciences or Computation
  • Good command of English (B2 or higher recommended)
  • Interest in human population genetics, ancestry, human evolutionary history, and the anthropology of genetics and identity
  • Basic knowledge of bioinformatics, genomic data analysis, statistical analysis, or data visualization will be valued
  • Candidates must meet the general eligibility requirements of the CSIC JAE Intro ICU 2026 call.
