The Institute of Evolutionary Biology seeks a: Laboratory Technician

Application deadline: 15th of July 2026.

More information:

The Microbial Ecology and Evolution Lab investigates how coral holobionts, corals and their associated microbes function and break down under heat stress. Focusing on symbiosis and protists, we use a systems biology approach integrating metabarcoding, single-cell and bulk omics, imaging, and AI-driven computational biology. Our goal is to link symbiont diversity to function and understand coral responses to the climate crisis.

Project description: The CORALPROS project investigates the protists (unicellular eukaryotes) living within corals, a long-overlooked component of the coral microbiome that may be key to understanding how corals respond to heat stress and the climate crisis. By describing the diversity of these microbes and mapping their distribution within the coral holobiont, the project aims to reshape our understanding of coral biology and resilience under ocean warming.

Duties: We are looking for a motivated, curious, and well-organized research technician to carry out the key laboratory steps of this project. Duties include developing laboratory and computational protocols, preparing laboratory solutions, and maintaining and organizing laboratory reagents and equipment. The technician will also provide logistical support for and take part in field sampling campaigns, including underwater (scuba) sampling.

Candidate requisites:

A Higher Vocational Training degree as an Advanced Technician in Laboratory Analysis and Quality Control, or an equivalent qualification. No previous experience is required.

Application process:

Candidates should send:

  • an updated curriculum vitae
  • a letter of motivation
  • two references (optional)
